How to Use a Steam Eye Mask (and When It Fits Best)

A steam eye mask is a thin, single-use mask with a small heat pack sealed inside. Air starts it warming as soon as you open the pouch, and it gives off gentle, moist warmth over your closed eyes for about 20 minutes. No microwave, no cord, nothing to charge or wash. Here's how to get the most out of one.

Step by step

  1. Get ready first. Take out contact lenses and remove eye makeup. Put your phone face down or in another room.
  2. Open the pouch. Tear along the notch and unfold the mask. It starts warming within a minute or so.
  3. Hook it over your ears. The soft side goes against your eyes, with the loops behind your ears. Nothing to tighten.
  4. Lie back and close your eyes. Let the warmth build. Breathe slowly through your nose.
  5. Take it off when it cools, after about 20 minutes, and throw it away. Each mask is used once.

When to use it

  • The last 20 minutes before lights out. This is where it fits best: screens off, lights low, warm and dark. It slots right into the final step of our 60-minute wind-down.
  • After a long screen day. Lying down with warmth over your eyes is a simple way to make yourself stop looking at things for a while.
  • On flights and trains. The flat pouches fit in any bag, and the mask blocks the cabin lights while it works.
  • For a midday reset. Twenty minutes with your eyes closed at your desk or on the couch.

Picking a scent

Scent is personal. Lavender and chamomile are classic evening choices, rose and jasmine are softer and floral, green tea and white peach feel fresher. If you're sensitive to fragrance or want nothing at all, go unscented. Not sure? A mixed pack lets you try a few nights of each.

Who should skip it, or check first

  • Don't use it after eye surgery, with an eye injury or infection, or on broken or irritated skin.
  • Take it off right away if it feels too hot. It should feel gently warm, like a warm towel, never hot.
  • Not for children, or for anyone who can't remove the mask on their own.
  • If you have reduced sensitivity to heat, for example from diabetes, check with a doctor first.

What it is, and what it isn't

A steam eye mask is a comfort ritual: warmth, darkness and 20 minutes of doing nothing. There's early, small-scale research on warmth around the eyes before bed, which we cover honestly in Eye Masks and Warmth: What Research Says. It's not a treatment for any eye or sleep condition, and if trouble sleeping goes on for weeks, a doctor is the right next step.

From the Celliden shelf

The Celliden Steam Eye Mask comes in seven scents, including unscented, each mask sealed in its own pouch. For the rest of the night, switch to a Contoured Sleep Mask to keep the room dark. Not sure when to start winding down? Try our free Bedtime Calculator.
