The 7-Night Wind-Down Reset
UpdatedShare
Big overhauls rarely stick. So instead of changing everything on Monday, add one small habit each night and keep the ones before it. Each step comes from public guidance by the CDC and NIH. Screenshot this page and start tonight.
Night 1: Pick your time
Choose a bedtime and a wake time you can keep on weekdays and weekends. A regular schedule is the first habit the CDC and NIH list. The CDC notes that most adults need 7 or more hours, so count back from your alarm.
Night 2: Set a caffeine cut-off
NIH News in Health notes that caffeine can take 6 to 8 hours to wear off completely. If lights-out is 11 pm, your last coffee, energy drink, or strong tea lands around 3 pm.
Night 3: Give your phone a bedtime
Devices off at least 30 minutes before bed, as the CDC suggests. The easy version: phone charges outside the bedroom, and an old-fashioned alarm clock does the waking.
Night 4: Fix the room
Cool, dark, quiet. Turn the thermostat down a little, cover the standby lights, close the curtains. More ideas in Cool, Dark, Quiet.
Night 5: Add warmth
A warm shower, a warm bath, warmth over your eyes, or simply warm feet. NIOSH notes a warm bath 30 minutes to 2 hours before bed can help you relax, and there's a small study on bed socks too (see What Research Says About Bed Socks). This is the step that starts to feel like a ritual rather than a rule.
Night 6: Empty your head on paper
Two minutes, three lines: what's unfinished, what's first tomorrow, one good thing from today. It gives the thoughts somewhere to go that isn't your pillow.
Night 7: Get morning light
The last step happens in the morning. The NHLBI says daylight is key to regulating daily sleep patterns and suggests at least 30 minutes of natural light each day. A walk, a coffee by the window, a commute on foot all count.
After the week
Keep the three steps you liked best and drop the rest. Consistency beats completeness. Want the full hour laid out? See The 60-Minute Wind-Down.
From the Celliden shelf
Night 5 is our favorite. The Celliden Steam Eye Mask is a single-use, self-warming mask: tear open the pouch, hook it over your ears, and enjoy about 20 minutes of gentle warmth in the dark. A 10-pack covers the reset week with a few to spare. Add our Cozy Sleep Socks for warm feet in a cool room. For Night 4, our Contoured Sleep Mask is the quickest way to a dark room, with eye cups that don't press on your eyelids, or try the feather-light Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask.
